Napper Tandy is a lively three-piece Irish, Scottish and traditional folk band from southern Wisconsin. Featuring classical guitar, cello, electric bass and three-part vocals, the group brings an unusual, fiddle-free sound to pub songs, ballads, sea songs, American folk favorites and assorted historical curiosities.

Bucket, the classical guitarist and lead singer, provides rhythmic fingerstyle playing, stories and cheerful instigation. Babs brings warmth, drama and rhythmic drive on cello, along with strong vocals and harmonies. Bryhan supplies the bass foundation, danceable low-end oomph and the steady judgment needed to keep the other two pointed toward the stage.

Napper Tandy performances combine strong musicianship, good humor, audience participation and songs meant to be shared—not simply observed. The result is traditional music treated as a living social experience: welcoming, spirited and just unruly enough to be memorable.

Napper Tandy is a three-piece Irish, Scottish and traditional folk band from southern Wisconsin, serving up old songs, strong harmonies and just enough musical mischief to keep everyone paying attention.

With classical guitar, cello and electric bass—and three voices that range from warm and thoughtful to loud enough for the back of the beer garden—Napper Tandy brings an unusual sound to familiar material. The band’s repertoire wanders through Irish pub songs, Scottish ballads, sea songs, American folk music, historical curiosities and the occasional tune that slipped in while nobody was guarding the door.

Bucket, the group’s classical guitarist, lead singer and chief instigator, steers the songs with rhythmic fingerstyle guitar, a storyteller’s sense of timing and an apparent inability to leave well enough alone. He introduces songs, supplies questionable historical context and encourages audiences to sing whether or not they have demonstrated the necessary qualifications.

Babs, the cellist, gives Napper Tandy its deep, warm and unmistakable voice. Her cello can carry a mournful ballad, growl beneath a drinking song or turn unexpectedly rhythmic when the occasion requires it. Her vocals and harmonies bring both sweetness and strength to the trio—and considerably more dignity than the other two deserve.

Bryhan, the bassist, provides the low-end foundation and much of the band’s danceable oomph. His bass lines give the traditional songs a broader, more contemporary pulse, while his singing adds another layer to Napper Tandy’s three-part vocal sound. Calm, steady and suspiciously competent, he is often the only thing preventing the whole enterprise from rolling downhill.

Anvil, Our occasional fourth, with a booming bass voice and a variety of ancient squeezeboxes has been known to join us when there is space onstage or a surfeit of beer.

Together, Napper Tandy offers a lively, personable performance built around songs, stories, humor and audience participation. There is no fiddle, no attempt at museum-piece perfection and very little standing solemnly in a row. Instead, the band treats traditional music as it was meant to be treated: as a living, communal experience shared among the musicians, the audience and whoever happens to be passing with a pint.
